Headlines In Handcuffs?: India’s Press Freedom Chokes As Govts Tighten Grip On Criticism

The Fact: India has dropped six places in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, falling from 151 to 157 out of 180 countries. Released by Reporters Without Borders on April 30, the index places India in the "very serious" category and notably, below every major South Asian neighbour: Nepal (87), Maldives (108), Sri Lanka (134), Bhutan (150), Bangladesh (152), and Pakistan (153). The report flags India for the intensifying “harassment” of independent media with criminal cases, with defamation and national security laws among them. The ranking is released every year by Paris-based NGO, Reporters Without Borders or Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF).

The Context: India’s rank has been declining steadily on this index for years. Even the global scenario is now the worst in 25 years. For the first time since the index was launched in 2002, more than half of all 180 countries fall in the "difficult" or "very serious" categories. When the index was launched, only 13.7% fell in this category. The legal indicator saw the sharpest deterioration this year, a signal that shows journalism is being criminalised, not just pressured, the organization said. For India, this year’s ranking is the third-lowest, after getting the 161st and 159th spots in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The ranking comes after last year, at least eight journalists were murdered and 33 were attacked, according to the Free Speech Collective.

The Peek Insight: While India’s position on this index was never ‘good’ even under the UPA government, this year’s ranking is particularly striking because of the comparison with our neighbourhood. Being ranked below Pakistan and Bangladesh, countries that are known to suppress free media, is an embarrassing reputational signal for the world's largest democracy. From murders to arrests and from sedition cases to account takedowns, when the country’s laws are used and changed to silence the truth, the global image of the ‘Vishwaguru’ comes under question.

Poll-Time Freeze, Post-Poll Squeeze: LPG Prices Jump After Election Season Ends

The Fact: On Friday, the prices of LPG cylinders were hiked by ₹933, an increase of more than 45% from the existing rates. The 19kg cylinder now costs more than ₹3,000 in most of India’s prominent cities. The prices of the ‘Chhotu’ 5 kg cylinder, which is often used in low-income households, have also been hiked by ₹261 per cylinder. The prices of domestic LPG cylinders have remained unchanged for now. As the price hike comes just two days after the conclusion of the elections in West Bengal, the opposition alleged that it was timed to benefit the ruling BJP politically. On the other side, the government said that prices are usually revised on the 1st of every month, and it has still ‘shielded’ consumers by not increasing domestic LPG prices.

The Context: This is the third increase in the prices of commercial LPG cylinders since the US-Iran-Israel war started in late February. The change started with a surge of ₹114 on March 1, then ₹195 per cylinder on April 1, and has culminated in the steepest one yet. In two months, the prices of commercial LPG cylinders have gone up by nearly 70%.

The Peek Insight: The government says these prices have increased because international prices are going up due to the West Asia conflict. But the Strait of Hormuz was not fully open even during April. While the prices were hiked twice in March, once on the 1st and then on the 7th, a hold on prices for the whole month of April and an increase just two days after elections raised questions on timing. But the international price pressures cannot be ignored. Crude oil prices are currently at their highest level since 2022, when the Russia-Ukraine war started. Brent crude prices have crossed $125 per barrel, an increase of almost 73% in two months. While several past elections show a pattern of oil and gas prices staying constant during elections, pressures caused by global oil supply disruptions are also real.

New Low, Old Trend: Indian Currency Weakens To 95 Against The Dollar For The First Time

The Fact: The Indian rupee has breached the ₹95/$ mark for the first time. The currency has fallen by over 12% over the last year, depreciating from around 84 to 95 against the dollar, amid pressures caused by Trump’s now withdrawn tariffs and the West Asia conflict. Amid uncertainties heightened by India’s high dependency on imports for oil, foreign investors have also pulled out over $20 billion from Indian markets over the last two months, doubled of the withdrawal amount in the whole of 2025.

The Context: Three forces are driving this fall. First, the US-Iran conflict has pushed Brent crude to $126 a barrel, nearly double its January price. With India importing almost 90% of its oil, the dollar outflow to pay energy bills has surged sharply, increasing the demand for the greenback while reducing the value of the rupee in comparison. Second, the earlier US tariff of 50% on Indian goods, which was later reduced to 18%, also added to the rupee’s fall over the last year. Third, a hawkish US Federal Reserve has kept dollar assets attractive, pulling capital away from emerging markets like India. While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been taking steps to defend the Indian currency, the global pressures seem to be outweighing the central bank’s interventions.

The Peek Insight: The impact of this fall won’t be limited to more expensive foreign travel and education, it will reflect in everything from imported oil, food products, medicines, fertilizers, and many other essential products. While many countries have been affected by the US-Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, what makes India's situation particularly difficult to ignore is its relative standing. Compared to other currencies, the Indian Rupee has been the worst-performing major currency in Asia in the last few months. Despite this, the rupee’s fall finds no mention in the speeches by top ministers recently.

Fists Fly, Forces Freeze: When BJP Netas Strike & Law Enforcers Turn Bystanders

The Fact: In a shocking video from West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, a group of personnel from the central paramilitary forces were seen watching as TMC and BJP workers got into a violent clash. The video is from the second day of polling in West Bengal, which was marked by several incidents of violence and allegations of EVM glitches. A report by news platform Scroll has confirmed that the two men seen hitting others in the video are BJP workers, with one holding a senior position in a local organizing committee.

The Context: As per reports, one of the BJP workers claimed that he was trying to stop individuals who were attempting to “disrupt polling”. On the other hand, the TMC candidate from Noapara, Trinankur Bhattacharya, alleged that BJP workers were attempting to capture the booth, and they attacked the husband of the local TMC councillor. The councillor, Supriya Das, said that she and her husband had approached paramilitary personnel minutes before the incident, but no action was taken.

The Peek Insight: The video has raised serious questions about the role and neutrality of central security forces, which come under the Home Ministry. If the forces didn’t act knowing that the attackers were linked to the BJP, it raises concerns around selective enforcement and accountability. Over 2 lakh personnel of the Central Armed Police Force were deployed in West Bengal to ensure ‘free and fair’ elections, this number is almost two-thirds of the total personnel deployed in the whole country during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With such a large deployment being coupled with inaction seen on camera, the strength in numbers did not result in ‘peace’ on the ground.

A ‘Cruize Holiday’ Ends 9 Lives: Tourist Boat Capsizes In MP’s Jabalpur

The Fact: In a heart-wrenching incident near the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, a leisure cruise boat with almost 30 passengers on board capsized. At around 6:15 pm on Thursday, the boat reportedly lost balance and sank, leading to nine deaths. According to reports, the victims of the incident included a mother and her four-year-old son. PM Modi announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each of those who died, and ₹50,000 to those injured.

The Context: Jabalpur Collector Raghvendra Singh said a sudden and violent storm triggered the accident. Despite prior weather alerts, survivors claimed that no safety precautions were taken on the boat. The man who lost his wife and son in the incident said that life jackets in the boat were kept in an inaccessible area, leaving almost no time for passengers to put them on before the boat capsized. Several passengers alleged similar negligence, adding that crew members turned a deaf ear to their pleas to turn the ship back as the weather worsened.

The Peek Insight: According to the Inland Vessels Act 2021, the Government of India has laid down safety mandates for inland water transport and leisure boating, which make basic safety measures like life jackets mandatory. However, enforcement agencies have time and again failed to implement these rules. Just two weeks ago, 16 people had died as a tourist boat capsized in Vrindavan. Strict regulations don’t mean much if they’re not backed by stricter actions. While the incident will soon be brushed off as an ‘accident’, the real causes of administrative negligence, weak law enforcement, and poor preparedness might not even be acknowledged, forget getting fixed.
