After 39 Days Of War, US-Iran Announce Ceasefire

The Fact: US President Donald Trump, early Wednesday morning, announced a two-week conditional ceasefire with Iran, which was also accepted by the Islamic State. With this announcement, Trump stepped back from his threats of “never-seen-before” military strikes on the Islamic Republic just hours before his Tuesday, 8 PM deadline. This agreement comes after Pakistan’s mediation. Per this, Iran will now allow the passage of fuel supply through the Strait of Hormuz, as the US intends to accept its 10-point proposal. Iran also confirmed that it would halt its defensive operations if US-led attacks ceased.

The Context: This ceasefire comes after nearly five weeks of sustained military escalation between the US and Iran, alongside Israeli strikes. Targets included key Iranian bridges, rail lines, power facilities, and, at times, civilian facilities. Just hours before the ceasefire announcement, Trump had warned that a "whole civilisation will die tonight” if a deal is not agreed on. Trump had even said that “an entire country could be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow”. Iran, too, was not backing down, vowing an “unforgettable” response if attacked. Pakistan's intervention has likely halted a catastrophic event, one which could put civilian lives at risk

The Peek Insight: The US agreeing to Iran’s 10-point proposal and Trump’s unprecedented warnings showed that the war had possibly slipped out of Washington’s control. Trump’s repeated claims that he had already “won” the war are now being questioned globally. Iran, on the other hand, despite facing two of the world’s most powerful military forces, refused to back down on its terms. Amid all of this, Pakistan has emerged as an unexpected peace broker. But with ceasefires only remaining on paper in recent wars like Israel-Gaza and Russia-Ukraine, the most important question now would be whether this deal actually takes effect on the ground and lasts for two weeks.

Manipur’s Fragile Calm Ruptured: A Mother Wounded, Her Children Gone

The Fact: Fresh violence erupted in Manipur on Tuesday, leading to the death of four people, including two children. In Bishnupur district, armed suspects hurled a bomb at a house in Moirang Tronglaobi around 1 a.m. The explosion killed a five-year-old boy and his six-month-old sister in their sleep. Their mother, too, was injured and is undergoing treatment.

The Context: The incident has now triggered protests in several areas. Demanding action, a mob stormed a nearby security forces camp and vandalised it. In retaliation, the security personnel opened fire to disperse the crowd, injuring at least four people. Following the unrest, Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh ordered the suspension of internet services for three days across five districts.

The Peek Insight: For a state limping back to normalcy after years of debilitating violence, this incident shows how fragile calm is in this Indian state. Despite several peace talks between the clashing communities and the Central government, and a newly installed Chief Minister, Manipur remains vulnerable. A common theme of violence, anywhere, whether it is Gaza or Manipur, is that it doesn't discriminate. Two children killed in their sleep should be a national breaking point. Even as the national glare moves away from Manipur, innocent civilians continue to live in precarious situations in this conflict zone, displaced, with their homes no longer safe.

Revised Or Rewritten? Bengal Electoral ‘Clean-up’ Smells Of ‘Voter Purge’

The Fact: Nearly 91 lakh voters have been removed from West Bengal’s electoral rolls following the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision. This means, of the state’s 7.66 crore voters identified in October, 11.85% will now not vote. Earlier, out of 90 lakh deleted voters, around 60 lakh were put “under adjudication”.

The Context: The major deletions have taken place in areas like Murshidabad (4.55 lakh), North 24 Parganas (3.25 lakh), and Malda (2.39 lakh). In Nadia and North 24 Parganas, the deletion rates were strikingly high, with approximately 77% and 55%, respectively. In one of North 24 Parganas constituencies, for instance, Peek TV's Ground Report revealed that nearly 20% voters received a notice which asked them to verify their identity. Of these, only 3 were Hindu voters; the rest were Muslim. At the same time, there were also several cases of living voters who were marked as ‘dead’. So, while the voter list for the first phase of polls on April 23 stands “frozen”, those voting on April 29 and “deleted” after the adjudication process have time till April 9 to be heard before tribunals, according to The Indian Express.

The Peek Insight: With this process, the SIR looks less like an administrative clean-up and more like the state deciding who gets to vote, or identify as an Indian citizen. Deleting almost a crore voters, just days before the elections, raises concerns. At the same time, a repeated pattern of disproportionate impact on specific communities, even unintentionally, leads to exclusion and apprehension among the already vulnerable, as shown by our Ground Reports. That said, India’s electoral rolls do need a clean-up, only if it does not disproportionately impact the most marginalised Indian communities.

In ‘Witch-Hunt’ Against Opposition, Why Are Himanta’s Cops The Usual Suspects?

The Fact: A team of the Assam Police travelled to New Delhi and searched the residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera on Tuesday. The search was conducted after Khera alleged that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, holds multiple passports and had undisclosed foreign assets in the US and UAE. Bhuyan, later, filed a complaint against Khera for the "false" claims.

The Context: Khera made the allegations at a press conference. Filing her complaint, Bhuyan alleged that the documents shared by Khera were “AI-generated” and doctored. CM Sarma too dismissed the claims as “false” and “politically motivated." Congress, on the other hand, has called the entire incident a "witch-hunt." The Assam Police also claimed to have found “incriminating” material from Khera’s residence. The elections are due in the State on April 9.

The Peek Insight: What actually stands out in this entire incident is the state police travelling almost 1,500 km across the country to take action against an opposition leader. Now, this is not a one-off incident. Under Mr. Sarma, the Assam police has earned a reputation for going after opposition leaders. In fact, Pawan Khera himself has been targeted by the Assam police in the past. It was Himanta Biswa Sarma’s police that deplaned Pawan Khera dramatically and arrested him from the Delhi airport two years ago for ‘objectionable’ remarks against PM Modi. From Opposition leaders Jignesh Mevani and Reetam Singh to YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, is the Assam police acting less as a law enforcement agency and more as the BJP’s and, in this case, CM Himanta’s personal power group?

Up Above The World So High, A Human Heart Beats Farther Than Ever In The Sky

The Fact: NASA's Artemis II mission created history on Monday night. The Orion spacecraft reached the farthest destination from Earth, a feat not achieved by any human in the history of mankind. At around 11:26 PM IST on April 6, the crew of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen reached 4,06,777 km from the Earth.

The Context: Before this, the record was held by the Apollo 13 mission for 56 years. That feat was, however, achieved accidentally. It was the result of a life-saving trajectory after an onboard explosion. The Artemis II mission, on the other hand, has been engineered to break that record. The Orion spacecraft has now completed its lunar flyby, passing within 6,500km of the Moon. It is now making its return to the Earth.

The Peek Insight: For over five decades, humanity remained confined to low-Earth orbit. Now, we have stepped outward again, reviving an ambition last seen during the Apollo era. However, timing matters. The world today is marked by war, energy insecurity, and a fraying geopolitical order. At the centre of this moment is the United States, echoing the strategic undertones of the Cold War space race. Just as the moon landing once signalled technological supremacy, this new push into deep space carries a similar message, of who leads and who follows.
