The Burden Of Proof: ‘Grave’ Evidence Of Bureaucratic Apathy

The Fact: In a harrowing incident in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, 50-year-old Jeetu Munda dug up his sister’s grave and carried her skeleton to the Odisha Gramya Bank to prove that she is dead. Munda took this extreme step after bank officials reportedly refused to allow him to withdraw ₹19,300 from his late sister's account, insisting that he "bring the account holder" to the branch. His sister had died three months prior, in January.

The Context: Jeetu Munda had informed bank employees of his sister’s death multiple times, but his pleas were ignored. Unaware of the legal requirement for a death certificate, Munda possibly felt he had no other way to satisfy the bank's demand to see the account holder. Local police have since criticised the bank, stating that the institution failed in its duty to explain the proper procedure for a deceased claim to a person from a marginalised, unlettered background. The primary objective of Gramya (Regional Rural) banks is to foster financial inclusion; however, this incident suggests a disconnect between opening accounts and providing accessible service to rural populations.

The Peek Insight: This tragedy highlights the superficial nature of financial inclusion when it is measured only by the number of bank accounts opened, rather than the quality of services and financial literacy provided to the vulnerable. It exposes a chilling gap in institutional empathy, where rigid technical procedures become insurmountable walls for the poor. While local authorities intervened after the video went "viral" and ensured Munda received the funds, the case serves as a grim reminder of a systemic failure. Countless others likely remain trapped in a cycle of bureaucratic indifference, unable to access their own life savings.

The Great Political Copy-Paste: Congress Sings ‘BJP’s Tune’, Silences A Critical Handle

The Fact: The draconian anti-terror law UAPA has been invoked against a social media account critical of the Congress government in Telangana. The police alleged that the handle, named ‘Telugu Scribe’, used ‘objectionable language’, undermining the ‘dignity’ of public figures, including state ministers. According to the police, the handle’s content incited hatred and unrest, prompting the state’s intelligence department to invoke UAPA.

The Context: Telugu Scribe claims that around 70 allegedly false FIRs have been filed against them over the past two years for offences including promoting enmity, public mischief, and posting obscene content. The account is said to have a bias towards the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the principal opposition party in the Congress-ruled state. This is not the first time UAPA has been invoked against groups or individuals that “oppose” the ruling regime. The BJP has also been accused of misusing the law meant for terrorists to silence dissenting voices.

The Peek Insight: While there is no concrete evidence yet to support Telugu Scribe’s claims, invoking an anti-terror law in a case involving alleged inappropriate online content appears extremely disproportionate. This suggests an increasing intolerance towards criticism, where political dissent risks being equated with terrorism. The move also exposes the Congress’s hypocrisy as the party has previously accused the BJP of misusing such laws to target critics and ‘stifling’ freedom of expression. Similar concerns emerging under its own government highlight inconsistency, and this reflects poorly on leaders like Rahul Gandhi, who repeatedly attack the BJP for annihilating constitutional freedoms and the right to dissent. This incident also underscores the fact that many of the draconian laws the Congress claims the BJP is using to attack the opposition were actually framed and strengthened under its own erstwhile governments.

An ‘Encounter’ With Democracy: Bengal’s Peaceful Polls Get A ‘Loaded’ Twist

The Fact: Ajay Pal Sharma, a 2011-batch IPS officer known as UP’s ‘encounter specialist’, is now one of the Election Commission’s police observers, appointed for ensuring ‘peaceful’ polls in West Bengal. Soon after taking charge, he sparked controversy after threatening TMC candidate Jehangir Khan. In a now-viral video, Sharma is heard warning his supporters, saying, ‘if there is any mischief, the treatment would be such that even crying won’t help.’

The Context: Acting on ‘complaints’ from residents in the South 24 Parganas district, Sharma conducted a raid and threatened Khan and his family members. The locals have alleged that Khan and his associates were intimidating voters. Sharma is one of the 11 police observers in West Bengal deployed by the ECI to ensure peaceful polling on April 29, the second phase of the state's election.

The Peek Insight: Election observers are meant to be an impartial authority, and not visible enforcers with a reputation that carries political weight. This is why the optics in this case are crucial. Here, the officer is known for his aggressive policing methods to execute a BJP Chief Minister’s political vision. Such conduct in a politically sensitive election like West Bengal risks blurring the line between deterrence and political intimidation. This has shifted the narrative from institutional oversight to power projection. Even if the intent was to prevent violence, his method can signal bias. Being Yogi’s ‘Singham’, can he remain credible if he is seen aligned, visually or rhetorically, with one political narrative?

Kalma At Knifepoint?: ‘Lone Wolf’ Gone Rogue

The Fact: A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Maharashtra for allegedly stabbing two security guards after asking them to recite Kalma, the Islamic prayer. As per reports, one of the guards sustained serious injuries, while the other suffered minor wounds. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis called the incident a case of "self-radicalisation".

The Context: The incident took place around 4 am in the densely populated suburb of Thane, where the two guards were on duty at an under-construction site. The accused, identified as Zaib Zubair Ansari, a US-returned man, asked the guards on duty if they could recite the Kalma. As per reports, when they said no, he allegedly attacked them with a knife. Investigations suggest that Zubair might have been influenced by ‘extremist content’ available online. The police tracked him down using CCTV footage, and he was arrested within 90 minutes.

The Peek Insight: This incident bears a troubling resemblance to what occurred in Pahalgam last year, where individuals were targeted after being questioned about their identity. In the present case, however, the accused appears to have been influenced by extremist content online rather than being part of an organised network. The ease with which such material is accessible today is deeply concerning and raises pressing questions about the level of responsibility and regulation that digital platforms must enforce over the content they host. Moreover, when perpetrators can disguise themselves as trusted professionals—such as doctors, as seen in the Delhi Red Fort case, or even teachers—and operate undetected within society, it exposes serious gaps in preventive anti-terror mechanisms. Equally worrying is the underlying motive: targeting individuals purely based on identity reflects a deepening of communal fault lines. In an already fragile social climate marked by communal tensions, such events can be swiftly politicised and exploited to advance divisive narratives.

Flight Risk, Final Boarding Call: Airlines Signal SOS, Indian Skies Near Shutdown?

The Fact: The Federation of Indian Airlines has written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation seeking urgent intervention, stating that a sharp rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices has pushed the sector into “extreme stress”. Airlines have alarmingly said that they are ‘on the verge of shutting down operations’. The body warned that airlines are facing severe financial strain, with ATF price hikes reported at Rs 73 per litre for international operations, making both domestic and international flights increasingly unviable and resulting in significant losses in April 2026.

The Context: The aviation industry is under pressure due to a global oil price surge triggered by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, including disruptions linked to conflict in the region and a blockade affecting key energy routes like the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude prices have reportedly risen from around $72 per barrel to over $118 at peak levels, leading to a sharp increase in fuel costs. The FIA also noted that fuel typically accounts for 30 to 40 percent of airline operating expenses, but this has now climbed to nearly 55 to 60 percent, further worsened by a depreciating rupee.

The Peek Insight: This situation highlights how quickly external shocks in global energy markets can destabilise India’s aviation sector. With fuel costs now dominating airline expenses and pricing power limited, profitability becomes highly vulnerable to crude volatility. It also raises deeper structural questions about fuel hedging, fare flexibility, and whether airlines will increasingly depend on policy support or tax rationalisation to stay financially viable in prolonged periods of high oil prices. Moreover, this warning by airlines has also exposed the dangers of a highly monopolised aviation sector, where a few airlines can arm-twist the government to make policy tweaks as per their whims and fancies.
