A Generation On The Brink, A Continent On Edge

France, Italy And India

The Fact: Following violent protests across France on October 17, authorities announced partial, localised curfews in several cities on Monday. In Paris, restrictions covered Place de la République and the streets around the Les Halles shopping area. These measures were aimed at protecting people and property from further violence and looting. Similar measures were announced in Lille, Lyon and Nice. The weekend demonstrations saw clashes with police, public buildings set on fire, and shops looted. However, several reports noted that the majority of the protestors remained peaceful. At the same time, US President Donald Trump linked France's violence to immigration, saying, “Paris is going to be a Muslim city very soon, and that wasn’t the deal.”

The Context: Europe is currently seeing a wave of protests. Across France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Albania, young people are at the forefront, raising some common grievances. Their concerns include rising living costs, unaffordable housing, underfunded education, and unemployment. In France, protests began over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and deteriorating school facilities, which have now expanded into a nationwide demonstration. Similar discontent over housing affordability has fuelled protests in Portugal and Spain, while students in Belgium have protested against rising education costs.

The Peek Insight: What connects these protests is a growing sense that the promise of a better future is slipping out of reach. For many young people, education no longer guarantees economic security, housing is unaffordable, and rising living costs are practically unmanageable. These frustrations are drawing in people beyond student groups, and have now turned their demands into wider challenges to their specific governments. At the same time, the violence and looting in France must be distinguished from peaceful protest. They should not become an excuse to dismiss the legitimate concerns of genuine protestors, something echoed by both French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
